Mathematics Professor Bart Ng Named Acting Dean
IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz has announced the selection of Bart S. Ng as acting dean of the School of Science. Ng is the Marvin L. Bittinger Chair in Mathematics Education and the IUPUI Faculty Council president.
"Dr. Ng's distinguished record as a mathematician and his intimate knowledge of the school and IUPUI make him an ideal person to lead the School of Science," Bantz said. "He has the experience and skill to build from the school's tradition of teaching and research."
Ng holds a doctorate degree from the University of Chicago and is the acting director of the IUPUI Center for Mathematical Biosciences, which provides an integrated structure for collaborative research and training at the interface between the mathematical sciences and the life sciences. His research includes work in applied mathematics, hydrodynamic stability and mathematics education.
Ng succeeds William F. Bosron, Ph.D., Chancellor's Professor and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, who has served as the school's interim dean since August 2006. Bosron will return to his work in the IU School of Medicine where he participates in research with colleagues in the Indiana Alcohol Research Center.
"Bill Bosron has been a capable leader for the School of Science. He has provided stability while launching a strategic planning process that is important to the future of the school," Bantz said.
Bantz noted that the Science faculty successfully secured funding for six signature centers during Bosron's tenure. These centers represent the best in interdisciplinary research activity at IUPUI.
Ng has been a member of the IUPUI faculty since 1975. In that time, he has played an active role with the IUPUI Faculty Council and is completing his second two-year term as its president. He's also served as chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences (1986-1997) and was successful in attracting several world-class mathematicians to IUPUI.
