Support Project SEED. Support Emerging Scientists.
What did you do on your summer vacation? For local high school students
the answer to that question includes experiments on the role of RNA in
bacteria identification, the design of a 2D biomembrane and other equally
exciting research projects. Thirteen students participated in the Project
SEED Summer Research program sponsored by the Indiana section of the
American Chemical Society. School of Science professors and faculty in
the IU School of Medicine opened their research labs as part of an effort
to encourage more young people to pursue careers in science and mathematics.
The American Chemical Society created Project SEED to provide opportunities for under-represented students to experience what it's like to be a scientist. Students entering their junior or senior years in high school are eligible. The program accepts students based on teacher recommendations, grades and a demonstrated curiosity for science.
Project SEED comes at the right time for these students. The program makes science real, not just something a teacher tells them about. Most Project SEED students will be the first in their families to attend college. The program's importance extends beyond the science that they learn in the lab; it reveals to students that they have a future in higher education.
The ACS-Indiana section has found that more than 70 percent of SEED students have pursued science degrees in college. With your support, we believe that we can give more students this opportunity.
With your gift to the Project SEED Fund, we can admit more students to the summer research program. Each year we have to turn away 60 percent of our program applicants because of insufficient funding. What happens to those deserving students?
Your gift today will be used for student stipends and program costs. Because this fund is managed by the IU Foundation on behalf of the School of Science, IUPUI, your generous contribution is fully tax deductible and may be eligible for your employer's matching gift program. (Please check with your employer!)
