Students Helping Students
Bill Conners says he would be a dead duck without it. The "it" is the IUPUI Mathematics Assistance Center (MAC).The MAC offers free tutoring to students who need help in math or statistics classes.
Oksana Carter says that she owes the MAC tutors an A+. "When I signed up for math courses, I was so scared. I was never good at technical science in high school. Without the people at the MAC, I could never have made it."
A collaborative effort between University College and the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the MAC provides multiple forms of onsite help, including peer mentoring, comprehensive tutoring and supplemental instruction programs. The MAC staff includes math faculty members and outstanding math students.
Freshmen find the MAC services beneficial in helping them adjust to college-level math. Learning the concepts through collaborative work assisted by mentors and tutors helps both new and continuing students deal with one common experience - math anxiety.
The main focus of the MAC is on student interaction with classmates, mentors, tutors and faculty. In this spirit, the MAC is designed to foster greater collaboration between students themselves.
