About the School of Science

Facts and Statistics

The School of Science enrolls more than 1,900 majors-1,598 undergraduates and 370 graduate students, including 97 Ph.D. candidates and 273 M.S. students.

Fifty-three percent (53%) of the school's undergraduate students are between the ages of 17 and 22. Sixty percent (60%) are female, and nearly 24 percent are minorities.

The School of Science student body represents 80 of the 92 Indiana counties, 27 states and 38 countries. International students account for six percent of the total student population with 122 students pursuing degrees.

Nearly 500 students graduated in the class of 2008 with associate, bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees. The number of undergraduate degrees increased by 6.8 percent, while graduate degrees conferred increased by nearly 10 percent.

Twenty-four (24) School of Science juniors and seniors were named among the Top 100 IUPUI students in 2008, including three Top 10 females and three Top 10 males. Six (6) received the Top 100 honor for the second consecutive year.

The School of Science is home to an array of experts in the physical, mathematical and life sciences. Two hundred twenty-two (222) full-time faculty, research scientists and staff are engaged in science research, teaching and civic engagement.

School of Science faculty hold more than $20 million in external research funding, including $8.25 million new awards last year. More than half of these funds is devoted to health and life sciences research.

In 2007, faculty members published 309 manuscripts, books and book chapters, abstracts and technical reports. They gave 311 seminar talks and professional meeting presentations. Twenty-three (23) faculty members serve as journal editors.
